Namvula Rennie is a singer-songwriter on the brink of a major breakthrough. If you haven’t heard of her yet, no doubt you soon will. After receiving critical acclaim for her debut album, Shiwezwa, the newcomer is now wowing audiences up and down the country with her blend of African Jazz, Latin and Scottish folk.
Born in Zambia to a native mother and a Scottish father, Namvula is a melting pot of cultures and experiences. Brought up in Switzerland and Kenya but schooled at boarding school in the UK, it was difficult to pin down the one place to call home (Kumushi). This is the intimate and soulful journey Namvula takes us on. Her voice is beautiful, on record as well as live. Her traditional and rhythmic dancing during her shows are both captivating and entrancing. Hers is a quiet confidence as she explains her heritage and the struggles of those that have gone before her.
Namvula is impressive in manner and sound. Her star is definitely rising. It was a privilege for Fliptime to watch Namvula at the fantastic venue that is The Stables in Milton Keynes. Connoisseurs of Southern African music will enjoy both Namvula’s album and her energetic live shows. Catch her on the road. Fans of Miriam Makeba, Letta Mbulu or Chiwoniso, will no doubt also embrace Namvula.
